A Widow's Journey
Today, I Bought Bananas was born out of a moment I never expected to face—the moment I entered the unfamiliar, overwhelming world of widowhood. Shocked, grieving, and searching for direction, I did what many of us do in times of uncertainty: I looked for guidance. Surely, there would be a “how-to” for this kind of life-altering loss. But no matter how hard I searched, the help I needed wasn’t there.
Most of what I found came from well-educated voices, but not widows. These authors had a lot of "book smarts," but no lived experience. And in grief, lived experience matters because no one understands this road like someone who has walked it.
Today, I Bought Bananas is raw, honest, and deeply personal—a reflection of my journey through loss, loneliness, and the quiet, everyday moments that define a new normal. It’s in those small moments, even something as simple as buying bananas, that the weight of change is often felt the most.
This book is for the woman who suddenly finds herself alone, unsure, and searching for someone who understands. You are not alone. Within these pages, I share my story in the hope that it brings comfort, connection, and the courage to move forward—one day, one step, one small moment at a time.
About the Author
Jo Ann Tilton is the widow of a fallen firefighter. Like many widows, her journey into widowhood began suddenly and unexpectedly with the loss of her husband.
As an Insurance Coordinator for Katy ISD, she has supported and counseled hundreds of widows while processing life insurance claims for their spouses. Through this work, she has developed a deep compassion for those navigating loss.
Jo Ann is also the founder and leader of The Journey Girls, a support group for widows, where she has helped many women walk through the difficult road of widowhood with faith and community.
She lives out her passion daily by pointing others to Christ through her words, her service, and her life.
